Fashion Dictionary: Maison
What it ACTUALLY means in terms of fashion
Good morning, bag lovers! I hope we’re all enjoying a nice hump-day cuppa Joe (did I just age myself or do Gen Z’s also call coffee Joe?). While you sip on your chosen morning elixir, feast on this - the actual meaning of Maison, as it pertains to fashion.

Maison = House
And we knew that, right? So when we hear “maison” in fashion, it’s in reference to a fashion “house.” Cool. So what does that mean?
History
It’s Charles Frederick Worth who is credited with creating what we know to be a “fashion house” or “maison” today. In 1858 he was the first designer to create seasonal collections of haute couture - as opposed to the public bringing materials to a designer when they wanted new clothes.
He was also the first to showcase said collections on live models, and was the first to attach labels of his name onto his garments. This was a pivotal moment in the development of the fashion industry, and in defining modern fashion houses.
Fashion House vs Brand
A fashion house is committed to creativity, artistry, innovation, and craftsmanship. Often led by a single creative vision, a house will influence what other fashion brands will create. A fashion brand caters to mass markets, and often involves a broader team of varying levels of creative control.
A fashion house, or maison, is referred to as such because it’s literally a house - one creative director, one vision.
