Gooooood morning bag lovers! I have a theory — Alessandro Michele’s Gucci Dionysus looks an awful lot like a bag from Tom Ford’s 2004 Gucci collection…and I haven’t seen anyone mention it. Let’s dig in, shall we?

So the Gucci Dionysus was released in 2015 under Alessandro Michele’s Gucci - it’s a perfect blend of Gucci’s functional craftsmanship with Michele’s love for embellishments and opulence in his designs. But, haven’t we seen something very similar before?
Like, in 2004? Liiiiiike in Gucci’s Fall 2004 Runway by Tom Ford? YEAH!

Look, I’m not a crazy person. I know there are many elements of the bag that are different. But are we really going to sit here and not acknowledge the fact that these bags are basically siblings?? The silhouette, the chain strap, the dual-head hardware in the center????
This is the Dragon Flap Bag, debuted in Ford’s final collection for the house in 2004. Needless to say, it didn’t get much attention - which is kind of shocking because I’m eating this bag right up. But let’s break this down shall we - because I can’t be the only one who’s ever thought this…right?
Key Similarities
The obvious - the circular hardware
The Dragon Flap features, you guessed it, a round hardware piece featuring a dual-headed dragon - the Dragon motif wasn’t new for Ford - it was seen occasionally on accessories and it embodied the decadent, dramatic, and sensual aesthetic of his era
The Dionysus features a dual-headed tiger, which is meant to signify Dionysus, Greek God of wine, pleasure, and ecstasy in mythology, crossing the Tigris River on a Tiger
The use of GG Canvas
While both handbags have many variations, some of which are completely devoid of the GG canvas, when you see the ones that do use the canvas, they look strikingly similar alongside the hardware
Silhouette
This could also be noted as a difference because it’s not exactly the same, but they’re similar in that they’re both medium-sized shoulder bags
Chain Strap
Both bags feature a chain strap that allows the wearer of the bag to style it as a shoulder bag, or a longer-strap shoulder bag
Key Differences
Edges
The Dionysus is quite structured, featuring hard-edged corners
The Dragon Flap has rounded edges, giving it a more casual feel
That’s kind of all I can think of for differences because they’re mostly THE SAME!
So please, tell me - do you think Michele was secretly inspired by Ford when he created the Dionysus? Or do you think I’m a bit far off here?
And then tell me - which do you prefer, the Dragon Flap? Or, the Dionysus?
And lastly, tell me - why do you think the Dionysus gained such popularity, and the Drag Flap was kind of a flop?
